I just got back from my connection mastery event and 30% of the audience gave us feedback that it was one of the best events they have ever attended. They said it was a transformational experience and it changed their life in some way shape of form, so I know we did a few things right.
As most people wait for the sky to fall and listen to the doom and gloom that is in the news we just had our best week in the past year, and I have several of my friends whose businesses are actually up despite this crazy economy.I won’t kid you the past year has been tough, I have faced my fair share of challenges. I refuse to participate in this recession, how about you? I hope you decide not to participate in it either.
Here are 10 tips that can help you take your business to the next level, and help you recession proof your income. Connect with me and let me know what you think.
1. CHANGE YOUR THINKING AND YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
I used to be a some what negative person, but the moment I made a decision to focus on expecting positive things and being a ball of energy that is contagious amazing things started to happen in my life.
As I write this I am on the plane.
2. DON’T READ THE NEWS, AND TURN OFF THE TV
3. CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT
4. GET AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER
But have some consequences built in if you don’t follow thru on the task you have committed to. If you say you are supposed to make 10 new sales call a day, and you don’t do it, what are the consequences. If you say you are going to work out 4 times a week, and have a date night once a week with your significant other, what are the consequences.
When I miss a call with my accountability call with my partner, I pay 50 dollars to him or his favorite charity.
5. GET A MENTOR
I used to try to figure out things on my own, thinking that was the cheaper way to go, because perhaps I couldn’t afford the higher priced coaching. Well it took forever, and half the time, I didn’t get the results I wanted.
You are paying for not having a mentor, whether you like it or not. What is the one area in your business or in your life that you are not getting the results you want, or it is taking longer then you would like to reach that goal. Today, I just get on the phone with one of my mentors. When I have a problem and I feel stuck and next thing you know in a matter of minutes, problem is solved.
I had a complex problem that came up 2 days before my seminar, and my mentor solved the problem in 3 minutes flat. I had tears of joy after that conversation.
6. CREATE YOUR OWN BOARD OF ADVISORS
Create your own board of advisors or build your own Power of 6 as my good friend and business colleague Dave Stech likes to talk about.
7. CALL YOUR CLIENTS
Find out how they are doing, what they need, and how else you can serve them.
8. CALL YOUR TOP PROSPECTS
When the economy gets tough, and the news is really bad, people get paralyzed from fear. They stress out about their business, their money, they think the worst is going to happen to them. Be the beacon of light they need to get them thru this tough time, give them ideas that can help them not only survive but thrive in this economy.
9. RAISE YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND YOUR STANDARDS OF YOURSELF
Some examples of that for me include getting a personal assistant to manage my personal affairs not my business affairs. Getting an assistant that travels with me at all times, which is different then my assistant who is back in Atlanta handling our day to day business affairs.
10. BUILDING DEEPER RELATIONSHIPS WITH MORE INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE
I just attended a meeting with Hip Hop Mogul Russell Simmons and the cost was a $1000 dollar donation to his charity. Some would say it was expensive to fly all the way to Texas for one day, but it was a great investment. Half the people I met, are really hard to pin down, and get them to respond to e mails so this was a great way to connect with many of them in a short period of time.
Not only did I get to meet Russell, I had the opportunity to connect with other movers and shakers who can help me advance my business, and I created new relationships and reconnected with some old friends, many who are likely to do business with me in the coming months.

The Connector

This is a great article! It’s so true that the more we pay attention and focus on lack and concern, the more of that we will bring into our lives, and the more paralyzed we will be. There were plenty of entrepeneurs who flourished during the Great Depression. Let’s be those persons!
My tip is to simply imagine that there is no recession. Imagine still getting orders and to imagine the joyful feeling you have when everything goes according to plan, money keeps rolling in and keep yourself in that space of joy. Then it should just all wash over you. we can and do have the power to create whatever reality we desire and if we connect to the creative source of light and express our desires they will be heard and acted upon.
mind over matter as they say
warm light wishes
here’s hoping no one buys into the doom and gloom the media tries to suffocate us with!

Larry,
Great post as usual. And it’s one that is dearly needed in today’s time. Thanks again for the post and for what you’re doing. I’m still mesmerized from your interview with Alejandro. Keep it up, good sir… can’t wait to see and hear more from you.

“Don’t read the news, and turn off the TV” should be #1! This mind pollution can knock you down and play with our heads until we really start believing the end is near. We really HAVE had it worse, and not very long ago… see the stats from the early ’80′s in my article, “What Sales People Need in a Down Economy”, at http://www.paul-johnson.com/troublebreaker/2008/02/what-sales-peop.html.
I just spend close to 5,000 on a business advisor who got me no where.
I want to be able to find the right mentor who can help me launch my project that is ready to go. However, I puzzled how to find this person who I know would change everything.
Got any suggestions…
Hi Larry,
I can’t wait to share this with my team! I believe one of the setbacks for people in sales during this rough time in the econonmy is to look at what they’re selling and discover how it best meets people’s needs. How is what I have to offer going to help THEM? It’s true, the world needs to consume less. There is no argument there, so while I figure out how to inspire a sales force, I think everyone needs to remember that gift giving over the holidays is going to happen, and we can help people care for the planet by NOT driving around to different stores…that we can be a one-stop shop for our customers and that we have a gift for everyone on their holiday list…that we can truly serve them, and most importantly, that we can offer affordable gifts during a rough economy. Also, people want to make a difference and they’re not sure how. Our gifts give back because the ingredients are from our community/fair trade suppliers and our company is about protecting out planet with every business decision. So the giving is green and people want to make better choices these days, period. It’s all how you look at it and changing your thinking about it is number 1 on your list and number 1 on mine and hopefully my team too! Thank you! Jill
Someone asked this already, but:

Hi Larry,
Loved your 10 Tips article. Can I reprint it on my blog with your permission and sig file?
Please let me know and thanks,

Hi Larry,
I loved your list.
I definitely agree that if you notice you are getting negative when looking at the TV/News, turn it off. On the other hand, some of us may need that source of information, especially if we are in services or have products affected by the news. I think the key is to look at the news for the opportunities available, for understanding that can be gained, etc. The idea is to have the news serve us, not turn us into a bundle of negativity and worry.
Additionally, I think the tips about having an accountability partner, having a mentor, and having a board of advisers or a Power of 6 are very essential in reaching big goals.
Thanks for sharing.
