Lessons On Life And In Business From Tim Russert
By Larry Benet on Jun 17, 2008 in Business, Featured
I was very touched after NBC announced the sudden death of the Meet The Press moderator Tim Russert.
Here are just a few of the many lessons that can be learned from an amazing journalist, an amazing person and one heck of an expert when it came to building relationships.
- He was a people person.
- He always did his research.
- He did an amazing job of making other people feel special.
People like Matt Lauer, to Andrea Mitchell to Tom Brokaw mentioned he always found time to ask about their personal lives, and their children. - He was humble, He never forgot where he came from.
- He was authentic.
- He was down to earth even though he reached the top of his field.
- He made everyone around him better, including his so called competitors.
- When there were tough times he would always find ways to reach out and motivate someone else.
- He had a unique ability to connect with his audience.
- He was a hard worker, was disciplined and believed in accountability.
- He was a giver.
- He loved his job.
- He loved people.
- He really loved children.
- He was a devoted family man and loved his son Luke.
I talk a lot about GSD factor. Your ability to GET STUFF DONE. The following is a classic Tim Russert Story that showed how high his GSD factor was.
One day he received a call from one of his colleagues at the Wall Street Journal who told him that the Wall Street Journal wouldn’t be funding the Wall Street Journal NBC poll that he co-developed.
The Wall Street Journal would be pulling out of that due to budget cut backs.
Tim said give me a few minutes and let me handle it. He picked up the phone to one of the top executives at NBC and that exec had a conversation with the top executive at the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal/NBC poll is still in existence because of that phone call that Tim Russert made that day.
I am sure when Tim Russert made that call that day to one of his bosses, his boss said no problem, Tim I got your back I will take care of this for you.
When you are a people person like Tim Russert, people want to help you and they will go out of their way to make things happen on your behalf.
